Mash Makes (MASH)
MASH provides a modular combined biomass heat and power (BCHP) technology that integrates with PV-based microgrids to increase availability and reduce reliance on diesel generators. The technology consists of a two-stage gasifier that partially combusts hydrocarbon rich feedstocks to generate a synthetic gas (syngas). Then, the syngas is purified and combusted in a gas engine to generate electricity on demand. The system can convert a daily supply of 1.4 metric tons of feedstock into 9500 MJ of electrical power per day. Wood waste, coconut husk, various types of agricultural waste, plastic-rich municipal solid waste, and sewage sludge, among others, have been successfully used as feedstocks in various locations across India and Africa. MASH is a Danish company with substantial operations in India and manufacturing partners in South Africa. For more information, visit https://www.mashmakes.com/
The Ministry of Energy (MoE) of Ghana
The MoE s responsible for national energy policy formulation and implementation. In 2020, the MoE established the Renewable Energy Directorate (RED) to execute renewable energy projects initiated by the State and to manage the assets in the renewable energy sector on behalf of the State. MoE is currently overseeing the provision of electricity to over 600 off-grid rural communities that cannot be electrified via the national grid. The Jang community has been selected as a replication site for the RePower project. The replication site will draw upon lessons learned in the RePower sites in Magadascar, Niger, and Senegal. The replication will be led by the Ministry of Energy (MoE) in order to validate the microgrid infrastructure developed in the project. It will also enable the Ministry to test a public-private business model. Currently, Ghana follows a public-led microgrid business model as many other African countries. However, MoE plans to test a private-public model as an alternative and the RePower provides an opportunity to do so. For more information, visit https://www.energymin.gov.gh/
